A modern composition can be read through its structure before its subject. A line may establish direction, an area of colour may create a centre of gravity, and an open passage may give the eye somewhere to rest. These relationships offer different ways into a painting without requiring a single interpretation.

Isabel's collection brings those choices into focus. Each work should be considered on its own terms: some compositions are immediate and assertive, while others reveal their balance more gradually. The connection is an interest in how the parts of a painting hold together.

Begin with the largest forms and the distance between them, then move closer to the edges and surface. Notice whether the composition leads the eye across the canvas or gathers attention in one place.

Living with the work

Consider the surrounding architecture as well as the furnishings. The width of a wall, the height of a ceiling and nearby lines can help you choose a format that feels deliberate rather than simply filling a gap.
